Before your AI agent can send text messages to anyone in the United States, there's a short registration process that's required by every major mobile carrier. This isn't a 365 Agents rule — it's an industry-wide requirement that applies to every business texting from a U.S. phone number.
The good news: we handle most of it for you. You just need to give us a few pieces of information, and we do the paperwork.
What needs to happen before your first text
•Your business needs to be verified. We verify your legal business name and tax ID against national records.
•Each type of message you want to send needs to be registered as its own "campaign." Appointment reminders are one campaign. Marketing is another. Two-factor codes are another.
•Your recipients need to have opted in to receive messages from you. We'll cover exactly what this means and how to collect it.
What we need from you
•Your legal business name, exactly as it appears on your tax records
•Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)
•Your business address
•A short description of each type of message you plan to send
•Sample messages — we can help you write these
•How you collect opt-in from your customers
How long this takes
•Business verification: usually a few hours, occasionally up to 48 hours
•Standard messaging categories: approved immediately once your business is verified
•Specialty categories (franchises, political, charity): up to several weeks for carrier review
If your business doesn't have an EIN
We currently require a registered business entity (LLC, corporation, or similar) to send text messages. If you're operating as a sole proprietor without a business structure, most states let you form an LLC online for under $200, and you can be registered within a few days. Reach out to us and we can point you to a few options.
